Tao Te Ching
THE TAOISM OF LAO TZU
|
The BookFake Lao Tzu QuotesErroneous Tao Te Ching Citations ExaminedLao Tzu was the legendary writer of Tao Te Ching. There are lots of quotes falsely ascribed to him. This book goes through 90 of those that are spread the most in books and on the web.
In this Internet era, it is important to keep a skeptic mind to the sensational claims appearing on the web. That also goes for quotes from famous people of the present and the past. A popular meme jokes about this: Abraham Lincoln is quoted as saying that quotes on the Internet are often fake. Indeed they are. One legendary mind of the past has been the victim of it more than most: Lao Tzu, the legendary first Taoist and author of Tao Te Ching. And that is far from only on the Internet. He has often been misquoted also in books, for the past hundred years or so. Some of the fake quotes are close to what Lao Tzu stated in his book, whereas others are absurdly impossible to put in his mouth with any credibility. So, he is a good example of how a skeptical reader can go about testing a quote’s authenticity, to whomever it is accredited. We can learn about Taoism also from words falsely claimed to be his. By recognizing the fakes, we get more familiar with what the true messages of Lao Tzu were, and how he worded them.
